Manaus - Um experimento realizado na Bacia do Xingu, no Mato Grosso, tenta simular os efeitos do fogo sobre a Floresta Amazônica. “Estamos botando fogo na floresta para entender o que acontece”, disse Daniel Nepstad, pesquisador do Instituto de Pesquisas Ambientais (IPAM) e The Woods Hole Research Center, nesta quarta-feira (2/4), segundo dia do workshop Latino-Americano Mudanças Climáticas e Povos da Floresta, que acontece em Manaus, Amazonas.
“Faz quatro anos que estamos provocando queimadas no local e tivermos uma grande surpresa em agosto último, quando chegamos para queimar novamente uma dessas áreas. No dia do fogo, ao invés dos 30º C usuais, a temperatura local era de 37º C e ventada muito. Com isso, o fogo durou a noite toda, ao contrário do normal, onde o ambiente úmido e sem vento faz o fogo cessar. Isso pode indicar que temperaturas altas, ventos fortes e fogo sem controle deverão ser cada vez mais comuns na Amazônia”, disse Nepstad. O experimento está sendo realizado em grandes parcelas de 50 hectares, na fazenda Taguru, no município de Canarana.
O pesquisador explicou que a mata depende de seu dossel fechado (as grandes árvores se tocando no alto e impedindo a entrada do sol) para se defender do fogo. Mas quando o fogo entra, abrem-se clareiras, onde desenvolvem-se samambaias, bambus e capins, que são combustíveis para o fogo. “Na Indonésia, existe uma área equivalente à metade da área desmatada na Amazônia dominada por uma só espécie de sapé”, afirmou.
Outro experimento do IPAM, o Seca Floresta, mostrou que a falta de chuva na Amazônia acaba matando as grandes árvores, responsáveis pelo dossel, agravando um fenômeno que já acontece por conta do desmatamento. “Fogo e seca podem provocar um ciclo de degradação em países como Brasil e Indonésia e tudo indica que esse processo não vai acalmar tão cedo. A procura por biocombustíveis, como soja, cana-de-açúcar e dendê deve continuar a empurrar a agricultura para a floresta”. Para Nepstad, valorizar a floresta em pé, através de mecanismos de crédito de carbono, pode ser um dos caminhos para minorar esse processo. (Maura Campanili/IPAM)
